Barbara van der Meulen, course tutor, was a full-time Teacher of English for 11 years before taking a break. She is currently ‘going rogue’ and working freelance in teacher education (currently with the University of Glasgow) and other employers such as Heriot Watt University, Argyll College and Argyll and Bute Council. Advanced Higher English: Textual Paralysis?

10am - 3.30pm

This course is for teachers of English who could do with a boost in their understanding and confidence about approaches to teaching Unit 2: Textual Analysis at Advanced Higher. Recently elevated to a compulsory element of Advanced Higher, its demands on pupils are significant.
This one-day course will present you with extracts from drama, poetry, prose fiction and prose non-fiction as we work with annotations, questions and activities with accompanying detailed, suggested exam-type responses that we can take away and work on with our pupils in school. For each extract there are specific learning points you can chose to study in with your classes.

By the end of this course you will have:

  • Worked with extracts from poetry, prose (fiction and non) and drama, as per the demands of the Unit
  • Focused in detail on the unique features of each of the genres
  • Worked on annotations, tasks and 'exam' questions
  • Responded with "detailed analysis" to tasks and questions
  • Considered the strengths of your own responses
  • Be more confident about teaching and assessing Textualk Analysis
  • Walked away with ideas and materials for your pupils and department
