Nicola Mills, course tutor, is a passionate educator who has over 20 years’ experience in the English classroom. As a subject specialist, she has gained vast experience in both the public and private sectors. Nicola currently lectures at New College Lanarkshire where she delivers English on the Highers programme. Nicola has worked for the SQA for most of her career. She is a current marker and a member of the Senior Team for Higher English. Nicola’s strengths lie in her ability to bring out the best in people and let them reach their potential.

Ryan Atkinson, course tutor, has over 10 years’ experience of delivering SQA English qualifications ranging from National 5, Higher to NC level. Prior to this, Ryan was involved in Community Learning, teaching ESOL, Core Skill Communication and tutoring English. Ryan is currently a full-time college lecturer in English. His teaching experiences have provided him with an excellent knowledge of education and engaging learners from a wide range of backgrounds, with varying levels of educational experience and ability. Ryan has a great love of teaching and the opportunities it provides to help others to achieve their goals.


Higher English – Preparing Candidates for Higher English - course tutor Nicola Mills

This course is aimed at anyone delivering Higher English or who is interested in doing so. It is particularly relevant for those who are new to teaching Higher English or would like to refresh their skills. The main aim of the course is to build teacher confidence in delivering to the National Standards.

This practical course contains an overview of each component of Higher English. There will also  be an opportunity to mark with reference to the National Standards. Good practice will be shared and delegates will be offered the chance to network.


Higher English - Reading for Understanding Analysis and Evaluation (RUAE) & Portfolio - course tutor Nicola Mills

This course is aimed at anyone delivering Higher English who wishes to build their confidence in the delivery of the two key areas of RUAE and Portfolio.

This practical course will take delegates through both components highlighting the challenges and explaining ways to deliver to the National Standards.

By the end of the course delegates will:

  • become more confident in teaching/assessing RUAE and Portfolio
  • gain a variety of practical ideas to ensure effective delivery of RUAE and Portfolio
  • know how to mark to the National Standards
  • be able to share good practice with other delegates
  • have the chance to network


Preparing Candidates for National 5 English - course tutor Ryan Atkinson

This course is aimed at current and future teachers of National 5 English. The course will examine all the components of the National 5 English course, including the nal exam, folio and units. The course will focus on the standards expected by the SQA, to ensure learners successfully achieve their National 5 English qualication. The course will provide an opportunity for teachers to increase their condence, by providing them with a clear understanding of the requirements of the course and
the opportunity to share best practice.
