AH Computing Science: Introduction to OOP

AH Computing Science: Introduction to OOP

This set of materials, supplied on a data CD is intended to be used to introduce the concepts and practice of Object Oriented programming as specified for the Computing Science at Advanced Higher level.

Teaching and learning student materials are provided separately for delivering the content in Java, Python and Visual Basic (using Visual Studio 2015) development environments as separate booklets for printing by the centre. They are supplied in Word (.docx) format so that they may be amended if necessary to suit a centre's software set-up or to update following any future changes to the curriculum.  There are sets of PowerPoint slides to accompany the booklets.

Each booklet begins with the principles underlying OOP covering the required knowledge and understanding of the OOP programming paradigm. This is followed by the design process of creating the Class and Use Case diagrams that form part of the Unified Modelling Language: the accepted design notation and development methodology when working with OOP. The printed materials and the accompanying PowerPoint presentation includes a worked example of producing a Class and Use Case diagram of a given problem. There are also possible solutions provided for three similar problems that are included as exercises within the materials.

The materials then move to implementing the program designs in Class and Use Case diagrams, first in the SQA Reference Language and from there into the chosen development environment.

There are practical and written exercises to reinforce the student's learning throughout the materials.
