Muriel Ashwood: Muriel has 36 years of experience as a teacher, Principal Teacher (Biology) and Senior Depute Head Teacher. For almost 10 years she has supported, advised and mentored student teachers, probationer teachers and their Principal Teachers / Faculty Heads / Supporters. She has been an Associate Tutor with Glasgow University working in the new School Experience Partnership model of student placement with both primary and secondary schools.

Muriel has an extensive knowledge and understanding of both the Interim and Final Profiles, required by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), to be completed by probationers and schools to achieve the new Standard for Full Registration.

Target Group:

This course is designed to support staff (PT /FH / Supporter) working with a probationer teacher for the first time, as well as for staff with a different subject specialism but belonging to the same Faculty as the probationer.

Aims of the course:

  • To raise awareness of the three elements of the Standard for Full Registration (SFR):
    • Professional Values and Personal Commitment
    • Professional Knowledge and Understanding
    • Professional Skills and Abilities
  • To provide practical information to enable probationers to fulfil their potential
  • To give vital advice on monitoring probationers’ progress throughout the session
  • To ensure quality feedback, verbal and written, to probationers on their formal Observed Teaching lessons
  • To examine the GTCS Interim and Final Profiles by participating in a practical session
  •  To deliver practical advice on supporting probationers with the completion of their Profiles
  • To maximise the input provided by probationer Supporters to the Profiles and consequently the outcomes achieved by probationers in terms of performance
